Gender and Media Connect (Zimbabwe), in partnership with Hivos, supported by Embassy of Ireland in South Africa, held a belated commemoration of the International Day of Democracy. The occasion was marked by stakeholders from different areas of expertise discussing how we can promote greater inclusion to support participatory democracy and ensure that peacebuilding efforts are sustainable and effective.

The Zimbabwe Gender Commission CEO Virginia Muwanigwa, delivered a keynote address, stating that democracy is not just a system of governance but a promise of participation, a commitment to equality, and a foundation for justice.

“Democracy allows every voice to be heard, ensuring that the diverse tapestry of our nation is represented,” said Ms Muwanigwa.

She also said although women continue to be under represented in both political and peace building initiatives Zimbabwe Gender Commission continues to champion gender equality.

“As the Zimbabwe Gender Commission, a constitutionally mandated body, we are dedicated to championing gender equality and ensuring that every voice is heard in our democratic processes,” said Ms Muwanigwa.

ZINEF Zimbabwe Secretary General Njabulo Ncube presented at the occasion on the role of the media in participatory democracy and peace saying free media plays a vital role in promoting peace, dialogue and accountability.

“Media serves as a platform for discussion for disseminating information about political process and policies empowering citizens to participate meaningfully in a democracy,” said Mr Ncube.

Zimbabwe Media Commission Executive Secretary Godwin Phiri, also presented practical ways that Chapter 12 Commissions can ensure inclusion in the pursuit of peace and democratic governance. Mr. Phiri highlighted that ZMC has been addressing the issue of access to information as a fundamental aspect of democratic engagement, enabling the public to hold government institutions and entities accountable.
